Another game another point

FT: Boston United 1    1 Tamworth

31 August 2015

Andy Morrell’s unbeaten Lambs made the Bank Holiday Monday journey to Lincolnshire to face stuttering Boston United as 5th faced 9th in their 7th Vanarama National League North fixture in 23 days, looking to continue the good form and build on the Gaffer’s last minute equaliser against Nuneaton on Saturday.

The records books showed that Tamworth, as a footballing side, had never beaten Boston on their own patch since the first visit in 1966 or the six visits that came after. Although the rain came down heavily on the pitch it showed little sign of it as kick off approached and the home side applauded the joint 100 appearance milestone of both Garner and Piergianni.

Tamworth got the game underway, attacking the end that housed the travelling supporters Lambs and Newton nearly pulled the trigger from 8 yards but a tackle denied him the opportunity, inside 1 min.
A through ball to Dyer nearly forced an opener, but again, the home defence cleared their lines. The Lambs rode some pressure from the home side around the 5 minute mark as the ball pinged around from the left and center.
Play was pulled back when Strong lunged in for a challenge on the Boston right wing on 9 and the freekick was headed behind for a corner on the left off Clarke.
On 13 Durrell slid the ball diagonally across the box from the right and Clarke slid in but couldn't connect to score against a former club. At the other end within 90 seconds Rollins made headway down the right but couldn’t find the final shot.
Strong’s chipped ball into the box was nearly met by Newton but he bounced off the tall home keeper and a freekick was awarded against the striker.
Taylor played the ball out for a Boston corner on 17, unfortunately his pass back to Belshaw was far too strong and he was riled for his efforts by the home faithful.
Newton forced a corner on 19 which went long and out for a throw which Tomassen launched towards Clarke but Piergianni headed it away.
Newton was forced away from goal by four or five Unitd players on 22 and chased Rollins back up the field in a bid to get the ball back, but was penalised for a clip on his ankles and the home side tried, unsuccessfully to build on the possession the referee gave them.
On 27, Newton crossed from left touchline for Dyer to head at goal but he couldn't keep it low enough and the chance went over the bar. Newton and Taylor combined for the latter to cross from the left, but it was a whisker too high.
At the other end Belshaw denied Southwell’s low shot with a good low save to the keeper’s right on 30 and Felix fired from the left of the box but missed the target.
After Newton made another tricky run down the left and chipped into the area, Felix saw his shot deflect off Preston and out for a corner which Belshaw gathered.
A couple of fouls against Lambs players stopped the flow of play around the 33 minute mark, then Newton and Taylor combined again and the latter’s shot was defended out for a corner which Alexander punched clear.
A long range effort from Garner rolled far enough past the left hand upright on 38 not to be of any trouble for Belshaw, Garner picked up a booking for a foul in the centre circle on 39 and a high bouncing ball from the freekick caused problems for Alexander.
A quick break down field and across the Lambs box ended on 41 with a goal for Southwell who shot across from the right of the box and into the far side of the goal despite the efforts of Belshaw (0-1, 41 mins)
Boston forced a corner in the one minute added time at the end of the first half, and it was cleared as the whistle blew.

HT: Boston United 1    0 Tamworth

Boston get the second half underway but they suffered an Immediate response when Taylor put the ball in from the right wing and Dyer, level with the post far, made it 1-1 with a sliding finish inside 46.
An attempt from Taylor on 54 made its way back to Alexander.
A foul by Strong set up the home side with a freekick and it fell to Piergianni past the far post who headed it back into the box for Jones to head straight at goal but he didn’t bank on Belshaw being perfectly positioned to push it over the bar with a reflex reaction save.
Strong made a good run forwards but was off target with his shot from 25 yards and when the home side regained possession Southwall was released into the box and slammed his shot into the side netting from the right of the area on 69.
Southwall’s ball from the right was put behind for a Boston corner on the left by Barns on 71 and Southwall met the dead ball with his head and was almost celebrating but was denied by Belshaw, clawing the ball out from under the post, one handed to keep the scores level.
Dyer spread the ball from right to left on 75 and found Newton well, but the latter’s shot was deflected and it made it easy for the United keeper to save.
Newton threaded the ball to Durrell on 78 and he put it back into the danger area but no one could get a boot to it, and the gaffer brought himself on for Newton with 11 to play.
Green conceded a freekick in the Boston left channel, just outside the Lambs area on 82 and Preston then Hubbins headed clear and then Clarke was adjudged to have tripped Dixon on 83 setting up another deadball on the opposite side of the box.
It eventually fell to Garner but his shot was easy for Belshaw and play went quickly to the other end where The Lambs won a corner.
Boston countered quickly and Jones got a header through to Belshaw on 84. Durrell’s cross took a deflection to take it high over the target for another Lambs corner on 86 which came to nothing.
Burns flicked the ball away from danger for a Boston corner on 89 and Green headed it clear.
Three minutes added time were shown at the end of the game and Morrell was booked for seeming to knock the ball from Alexander’s grasp after both had jumped for a high cross.
Preston and Tomassen combined to deny a cross from Southwell on 93 and the final whistle blew on another point on the road and third in succession.
