No Brake-ing The Lambs

FT: Leamington 1    2 Tamworth

17 January 2015

Looking for straight league win 11 of 11 Tamworth travelled to The New Windmill for the first competitive fixture between the two sides since 1979.
Unchanged from the previous game, Tamworth in white and red kicked away from the stand by the clubhouse towards the North Bank in the first half as the Brakes got the game underway.

The Lambs pushed forwards from the first whistle and defended strongly when The Brakes got the ball into the Tamworth half. With former Lambs Ross Atkins in the home goal and Dominic Langdon in the Leamington line up it added a bit of spice to the game for the travelling fans.
A freekick down by the right hand corner on 89 was whipped into the box by Chilton and the resultant header into the ground had to be dealt with by Green on the line, conceding a corner in the process which saw Vidal block the goalbound effort from Mace from the flagkick.
From a Daniels corner on 14 Green and Sampson somehow contrived to miss from both sides of the goal when it looked from the terraces that it would have been easier to strike the target.
Taylor forced a left sided corner on 24 with a deflected cross and when Daniels struck it on 25 it was headed away but the same player put it back in and Atkins allowed it to slip through his grasp and Connor was perfectly positioned for it to go in off him. (1-0, 25)
The lead wasn’t held for long though as from a right sided corner Gordon was given a free header and Belshaw was unable to get close to it to stop it sneaking in at the near post (1-1, 29)
Leamington went close to having a clear sight of goal on 34 but lacked accuracy with the final ball while at the other end on 37 A great save from Belshaw prevented Newton from making it 2-1 to The Brakes on 38 after breaking through the back line and striking for the bottom left corner.
A Leamington freekick taken by Morley and Preston got his head to the ball to divert it just wide of the mark. Another freekick was awarded on 44 but Sampson picked up a booking for his foul and Morley’s freekick forced Belshaw to dive full lengthy and smother the effort shortly before one minute added time was played out and the referee blew his whistle.

HT: Leamington 1    1 Tamworth

Tamworth restarted proceedings and a freekick was quickly awarded which Daniels launched over the target and out for a goalkick. Daniels kept his next effort down and forced Atkins to smother his long range effort from the left wing.
Green picked up a booking for a challenge on Morley on 51.
A strike from Daniels took a deflection and Atkins was happy to take it at his near post. Styche came back into action for The Lambs after returning on loan for the rest of the season in place of Green on 62.
A Tamworth corner was forthcoming on 65 but a clash of heads quickly forced a stop in play and it forced Preston off and Smith on, on 68.
Goddard tried a looping shot in the 72 minute which Belshaw was happy to watch go over the bar but it didn’t go over by much.
Vidal was forced to put behind his own byline on 74 for a Leamington corner on the left which Sampson headed away for Morley to trap and he hit a rising shot from distance over the bar. Play quickly switched the other way and a Daniels freekick curled into the arms of Atkins.
A long range effort from Daniels was pushed around the post for a corner on 77 and Styche forced Atkins to concede another one on 79 but the ensuing play was unable to force a save after the ball bobbled around in the area.
A deep freekick from Daniels came off Hibbert on 84 and looped onto the top of the net shortly before The Lambs made their final substitution of the game.
Then, when the ball ran towards Atkins from a poor Mace pass on 86 Daniels chased it down and robbed the keeper before slotting home from a tight angle on the left of the box to restore the lead. (2-1)
And after four minutes added time the final whistle eventually blew on the Lambs eleventh straight victory.
