Belshaw ensures opening point
09 August 2014Harrogate for the game underway attacking the still to be completed stand behind the goal at the opposite end of the ground. After early intentions from The Lambs were thwarted, Green and Preston were forced to halt runs from the home side as Walshaw and a ball in from the right could have been dangerous but Town missed their chance.
On 9 Belshaw prevented Walshaw’s low shot at his near post and a Kerry corner from the deadball went long.
Clarke was penalised for a late challenge on former Lamb Kerry on 13 and a push from Hildreth on the same player shortly after went unpunished as the midfielder battled to control the match from the middle of the park for his new team.
Belshaw pulled off a good stop from a Walshaw strike on 19 which he hit on the angle from 25 yards and looked to be heading from the bottom left corner before the keeper flicked it away off the floor.
Walshaw fed Kendall down the Harrogate left on 24 and struck low across the face of goal, as The Lambs continued to struggle to get near the goal. A switch turned shortly after as Hibbert’s flicked header was smothered by Barnes on 29 and Sleath nearly found the former with a teasing cross.
A couple of left sided corners from Daniels were cleared by Town and Barnes was forced to take a cross from the same player on 34. On 35 though, Belshaw was tested once again and proved himself once again too as the former England C keeper blocked Kendall’s edge of the box attempted finish and then recovered to deny Walshaw the follow up.
Jackson won a corner on the right on 42 as The Lambs pushed forwards down both wings but it came to nothing and after a booking for Hildreth following a challenge on Kerry in the centre circle the half time whistle blew.
After the restart, The Lambs got the match underway again but there was an early chance for Walshaw who got his head onto a right wing cross but was unable to test Belshaw.
Simmonds struck for goal on 48 but dragged his shot well wide of the mark and it was never going to get close to Barnes.
Sleath’s ball from the left found Simmonds on 52 and his knock down found Daniels in turn, but the latter’s shot left a lot to be desired and cleared the skeleton of the new stand by some distance.
The same could be said of Turner’s attempt a couple of minutes later when the home team pushed forwards. Mettam replaced Simonds on 53 and after a foul on Green 35 yards out on 56 the same player lined up the dead ball but it came to nothing.
Belshaw then denied Walshal’s right sided snapshot on 59 and from the corner the same player headed goalward but Hildreth was on hand to deny him with a well times header clear. There were claims for two penalties following challenges on Walshaw on 63 and 65 but the referee was having none of it, and Trainer came on for his second spell at The Lamb on 69.
Thornton came on, on 72, for Jackson but it was Walshaw who nearly netted on 76 only to be denied by Belshaw and Preston booted the loose ball away from danger.
A minimum of three minutes added time was shown at the end of the game and Belshaw rose highest to gather a deep cross and prevented sub Swain’s cross from doing any damage before Preston denied Walshaw a run into the box and the final whistle blew on a point a piece.
