Defeat in Cheshire part 2

FT: Chester FC 2    0 Tamworth

25 March 2014

Following Saturday’s disappointment that lead to defeat at Moss Rose, The Lambs returned to Cheshire to take on 5th from bottom Chester in another ‘six pointer’. With Matt Godden out injured, Dale Belford signed Amido Batis Cande a former Benfica player who had been training with The Lambs recently but only received international clearance in the day before the game.

Chester got the game underway kicking towards the Swansway Chester stand, the corner that approx. 30 Lambs fans gathered in the corner of the away section of the ground.
The home side were awarded a corner when a deep cross from the left by Heath was punched behind by Belford and the corner eventually fell to Craig Mahon who struck low into the side netting from the left of the box.
Rooney tried to emulate his namesake on 12 with a long range dipping shot but cleared the bar by a yard or so and nearly took out the steward behind the goal. Menagh received the ball on the left of the area on 15 and it took a last ditch tackle to deny the home side a clean strike at goal as it ran towards the edge of the box.
Rooney then missed a glorious chance to rifle home a cut back from a fairly central position and only managed to lift the ball over the bar from 18 yards.
Craig Mahon forced Belford to push the ball out for a corner with a 20 yard partly scuffed shot on 20 but the resulting corner was poor.
Kerry’s ball into the area deflected out for a corner on 25 and Thornton’s ball in was a whisker away from the diving head of Richards in the closest chance so far for The Lambs.
Barnes-Homer and Thornton were caught just off side and the latter forced two saves around the half hour mark.
In between the two Lambs chances Menagh brought a good stop from Belford with a right footed drive from 20 yards as the game became very open and end to end. Thornton worked hard at the back to prevent Turner's run into the box on 35 and then he placed a shot over the bar after good work from Richards on 37. A freekick was awarded to the home side on 41 and Rooney forced a low stop from Belford from the rebounded dead ball which was followed up but put wide as the offside flag went up.
Caprice forced a corner on the right on 44 but it was wasted and the tension on the field was showing as both sides desperately defended, as one minute added time was shown.
Caprice whipped a cross in from the right and Thornton got the back of his head to it, under pressure, and it as cleared away with a hefty boot shortly before the whistle blew.

HT: Chester FC 0    0 Tamworth

Tamworth restarted proceedings and Chapman pulled off a superb save from Richards glancing header in the box from a right sided freekick to force a corner which the keeper punched clear.
A threaded pass into the box on 51 found Kerry on the left of the area and he tried to pick his spot but lifted his shot far past the far post.
As the rain fell, the hour mark passed and neither side was giving an inch as both moved the ball around quickly but failed to create a goalscoring chance in the final third. And then, on 62 a low ball from Rooney into the path of Turner was pushed towards the near post and it cannoned off Richards-Everton’s thigh, onto the near post and into the net to give the home side the lead (0-1, 62 mins)
It was 2-0 to Chester on 67 when Rooney’s ball into the centre of the box was finished by Carlton from 8 yards out.
Belford denied Rooney’s right footed strike from 25 yards with a strong parry that earned the home side a corner on 70 but the resulting flag kick was wasted.
Batis-Cande replaced Barnes-Homer on 76 in a straight swap up front but play switched to the other end and The Lambs defence had to defend strongly from a left sided cross.
Caprice was booked for a challenge on the touch line and the resulting freekick hit the back of the near post. Keane brought down Hobson on the edge of the area on 85 and Carlton’s freekick came back off the wall for a corner.
On 89 Rooney pulled the ball across the box from the right for Turner but he lifted his shot over the bar when it may have been easier to score, and five minutes added time were shown.
Thornton’s right sided cross was denied by a good one handed stop from Chapman but there was no more action and the game ended in another defeat.
