Lambs slip on the Moss

FT: Macclesfield Town 2    1 Tamworth

22 March 2014With the Lambs injury list almost as long as a team sheet boss Dale Belford took his depleted squad to the Moss Rose to face mid table Macclesfield Town.
Lloyd Kerry was the latest casualty as The Lambs embarked on the Great Escape from the relegation zone and was the only change to the side that suffered defeat at Alfreton in midweek.
Baker remained in the place he took on as sub on Tuesday night while new signing Claudiu Hoban came into the squad and occupied a spot on the bench. With two victories over the Silkmen already this season, one in the league and one in the FA Trophy and both at The Lamb Belford was hopeful of a hat-trick of wins.
The Silkmen got the game underway and attacked The Lambs from the whistle.
A long ball into the area by Williams was nodded behind by Keane for a left sided corner on 3 but a deflection took Boden’s shot over the bar for another on the otherside.
A foul by Keane on Holroyd 35 yards from goal in the right channel and Andrew unleashed a stunning freekick that left Belford with no chance of stopping it’s flight into the bottom right of the goal. (0-1, 8 mins)
Peniket tried to get The Lambs straight back into the game and the ball was kept in the final third for the next two or three minutes but the home side quickly took control again and forced Tamworth back into their own half.
Mackreth’s chipped ball over the Lambs defence on 15 almost resulted in goal number two but the offside flag prevent one of two home players reaching it unmarked at the far post. The home side were using the wind behind their backs to their advantage but Tamworth forced a corner on 18 and Godden got his head to it well enough to force Taylor into a save at ground level.
Another corner was forthcoming on 20 but Macclesfield cleared easily and Caprice was forced to defend against Holroyd.
Evans fed Baker in the middle of the park on 22 but the shot went over the bar and Thornton and Keane combined shortly after and the resulting shot was pushed away for a corner.
On 28 Rowe a cross from the left wing was met by Holroyd in a central position in the box but his right footed effort went wide of the right hand upright.
There was a booking for home captain Turnbull on 35 and Macclesfield looked to add another but when Peniket crossed from the right and it went over the home defence Thornton took time to fire right footed back across goal into the bottom right hand corner. (1-1, 40 mins)
One minute added time was shown at the end of the half and Keane conceded a freekick 35 yards out but this time in the left channel which Andrew thumped against the bar before Mackreth followed up and put wide, shortly before the whistle blew.

HT: Macclesfield Town 1    1 Tamworth

Tamworth restarted proceedings attacking the goal behind which no fans were positioned.
The travelling 54 or so Lambs fans in the seat to the left of the goal would have a great view should the net ripple again.
But it was Boden who made the onion bag bulge with his 18th of the season on 56 glancing a header from a right wing cross into the bottom left corner past Belford to restore the home side’s lead. (1-2, 56 mins)
A corner on the left caused problem for the home defence as Keane and Peniket tried to get shots away before Mackreth booted the ball clear.
Mahon and Godden tried efforts from the edge of the box but both found their way blocked, as did Baker with a similar effort a few minutes later.
Thornton tried a dipping shot from 18 yards on 80 but it went just over the bar as there continud to be no way through.
As the game continued neither side looked to be taking control but with the wind behind them and the rain clouds occasionally bursting over the pitch time continued to run out for The Lambs.
Substitute Richards was booked along with goalkeeper Taylor on 86 when both clashed in the area and Richards was unlucky not to findthe back of the net shortly after when his shot from the left of the goal hit the side netting.
But despite some late pressure and close calls a point couldn’t be mustered and after three minutes added time the whistle blew for full time.
