Reserves run out winners

FT: Barwell 0    1 Tamworth

27 July 2012

While most of the rest of the world had their eyes squarely focussed on the Olympic Opening Ceremony in London, Marcus Law returned to a venue of previous successes and allowed a largely reserve side to take the baton and show that they could shine in a pre-season run out at Kirkby Road in front of a largely partisan crowd.
The home side gave more than as good as they got and will feel aggrevied not to have taken something more from the game as Lambs keeper James Wren was called into action, if not by direct shots, then defintely by having to mop up or push away dangerous balls, throughout the match and was also occasionaly beaten by what looked, but failed to be, a certain finish.

Despite being played at a highly energetic space, Barwell took the ball down the right on numerous occasions to win numerous corners but failed to make any of the chances count, while Tamworth struggled to break through at all at the other end.
The 'oldest head' on the park for Law's side was undoubtedly Graeme Law, making a return in a Lambs shirt since his last appearance in 2008-09 and he found himself pitting his wits against another one-time Lamb - Richard Lavery - who featured briefly in the 1999-2000 season.
For the most part Barwell could have been said to hold the upper hand and the bext chance of the first half came towards the end when Wren was forced to parry Lavery's header away from danger.

The second half was a slightly different affair initially as Barwell changed personnel but The Lambs stayed the same however Wren's goal was once more under attack and a handful of chances were squandered with the ball zipping past the post or over the bar when it looked almost certain an opening goal would be the outcome.
The only goal of the match did come shortly afterwards, but it was at the other end as Jermaine Fletcher headed home Connor Gudger's right sided corner at the far post on 70 minutes (1-0).
Jamie Healey almost made it two from Kyle Patterson's through ball but headed at the keeper rather than around him.
And Wren's goal continued to lead a chalmed life at the oposite end when Barwell missed another chance and could only watch as the ball rolled past the far post from a tight angle.
