Last gasp equaliser gets Lambs out of jail

FT: Hinckley United 2    2 Tamworth

12 November 2011

Tamworth started the game kicking towards the large terrace behind one goal in a packed ground a complete wash with a heady mix of Lambs and Knitters fans.

The home side enjoyed early breaks forward through Belcher who was denied by Kanyuka early on and then his curling pass to Gray had to be blocked by the same Lambs defender.
A foul by Smith then set up a rehearsed move by the home side and ended with Dudley firing over the bar.
On 10, Smith hit a snapshot towards goal from Barrow's left wing pass and won a corner from which Thomas sent the ball into the box and Patterson's glancing header went wide of the far post.
Green put a good ball through for Tait on 19 and forced the keeper to come out and conceded a corner from which Kanyuka struck a right footed volley, btu it was blocked at close range for another flag kick. From this one, Francis met the ball well with his head, but powered the chance over the bar.
On 23 Christie set up for Thomas to advance into the box but keeper Haystead won the rush for the ball and The Lambs enjoyed a short spell of possession and pressure which ultimately bore no fruit.
Around the half hour mark, Oddy found Belcher who in turn struck the corner of bar and post with a right foot shot and ten minutes later Tait fouled Byrne for a freekick on the Hinckley left wing but Raglan struck the resultant shot out past the far post.
Then with a few minutes until the break came the talking point of the game.
As Patterson advanced into the box he challenged the keeper for the ball at height and both players hit the ground. The referee blew his whistle also immediately, signalling the ball was no longer in play as a foul had been committed, and the game was stopped for a freekick to the home side. However, there appeared to be a niggly exchange between Patterson and Haystead which resulted in the keeper quite literally seeing red to leave his team short of a man - with Byrne being ‘sacrificed' for the replacement goalkeeper Hinds.
It then appeared that the referee awarded a penalty and Tamworth set about decided who would take it, but, following consultation with one of his assistants, the penalty decision was correctly rescinded and the initial freekick was taken by Hinckley.

HT: Hinckley United 0    0 Tamworth

If the first half was incident packed but lacking goals, then the second half was that and then some, as after a shaky start by both sides, Patterson struck the bar with a header on 58.
Green forced the first real save from Hinds on 65 and a flurry of bookings ensued as tempers flared both on the field and unfortunately also on the terraces and eventually the technical area too.
Gray pounced to fire into the far corner past Hedge (0-1, 78 mins) but on 83 Christie equalised from the penalty spot after Shariff had been brought down by Raglan. (1-1, 83 mins)
Three minutes later Newton threaded a delightful ball to Kerry who chipped over Hedge and into the far corner to put the home side back into the lead (1-2, 88 mins) and as time was running out Kerry almost added another but curled his shot just over the target from the left of the box.
Then, deep into the five minutes of added time Green's long ball into the box from the left found Patterson and he made no mistake to set up the replay. (2-2, 90+ mins)
