Lambs unable to find a goal for a point

FT: Southport 2    1 Tamworth

October 2010

After back to back 3-1 reversals at the hands of York and Crawley, Gary Mills took his side to Haig Avenue to face promoted Southport - entering the game without a win in seven - with a selection headache. With MacKenzie and Oakes ill and Sheridan injured Lyttle made an unexpected start and Lake-Gaskin came in for Bradley, who took a place on the bench alongside Academy keeper Connor and the gaffer himself.

[laptop file failure = first 15 minutes of usually transcribed action was lost - apologies, hand written notes, transcribed below!]

- Barrow saw his shot deflected off the head of Flynn and into the arms of keeper McMillan
- Daly forced Atkins into a good save with a low shot
- Daly again forced Atkins into a full length save from a close range header
- Perry got on the end of a Lyttle cross from the  right wing but his header hit the right hand upright and was cleared
 - McNeill got the opening goal of the afternoon with a close range finish after a double stop on the line first from McNeill and then Daly before the former slammed home. 0-1
- from a corner Flynn flicked a header to the near post and Daly nodded home to double the visitors lead 0-2
- Lake-Gaskin struck the bar from the right wing with McMillan back pedalling
- Barrow forced McMillan to spill a left wing cross and Perry got the ball back but his shot was deflected over for a corner.
- Perry crossed from the left and Lake-Gaskin slotted the ball home on the half volley from 6 yards getting amongst the defenders well to take his chance - 1-2

HT: Southport 2    1 Tamworth

Tamworth got the second half underway, and Smith got a low shot away from Lake-Gaskin's pass but it went wide.
- Moogan missed a sitter firing wide from 12 yards when McNeil's header down found him in an acre of space in the box. Credit to Atkins who made the target tiny.
-Barrow tried his luck with a 20 yard shot after good work by Perry on the left but cleared the target.
- Rodman unable to cut the ball back to Tait in the box from the left by-line.
- Bradley replaces Thomas
- Lake-Gaskin found space in the box and forced McMillan to save at his near post for a corner but The Lambs are unable to get a clean shot away
- Tait wins another corner on the opposite side with a shot while on the floor by the penalty spot. And when Perry gets a sight on goal he lifts his half volley high over the target
- An hour gone and The Lambs need a goal as Daly is looking hungry for another
- Bradley booked for dissent after throwing the ball away
- Blakeman rolls a shot at Atkins after making good space on the edge of the area
- Wylde prevents Daly getting a shot away inside the area and recovers to deny substitute Winn on the follow up
- A Southport handball from Perry's attempted pass sets up Smith with a freekick in the right channel, 25 yards out but Barrow's resulting shot is blocked
- Wylde's fails to connect fully with an overhead attempt from Lake-Gaskin's left sided cross
- Lever is booked for a foul on Barrow 10 yards outside the area but the same player chips the freekick to keeper McMillan

- Tait unleashes a power driver from 25 yards but takes Wylde out in the process!
- two subs - one for each side - as both front men are replaced but the height of Mitchell now reflects the height of McNeil as Wylde take up a forward position again
- Jay Smith fires low into the arms of McMillan from a central position after good work from Barrow
- Jay Smith is booked for a two footed challenge on Barratt
- McNeil called off side as he strays a yard over the haflway line running onto a long ball from the back with a clear run at goal in front of him.
- Tamworth win a corner but Rodman sees his powerful shot blocked and another corner is won on the right again. Wylde heads down through a crowd of players but McMillan is well placed.
- A foul by Williams on Rodman as he runs towards the box earns the Southport player a booking and with the wall a yard or two inside the area Rodman clears the bar with his freekick.
- Atkins denies Moogan at the near post with a brave save to concede a corner which the keeper takes a foot off the line
- There's no let up in the pace and Lake-Gaskin some how misses the target after receiving the ball at his feet six yards out and the goal at his mercy but put the chance over  the bar. 4 minutes added time is shown
- McMillan is booked for time wasting
- Gray skips around five or six players in the Lambs area but sees his angled shot blocked by Marshall
- Rodman forges his way into the box but his shot is blocked for a corner and despite Lyttle's knock back from a deep Bradley cross the linesman's flag halts play
- Ten Tamworth players are in the final third of the pitch and Rodman's shot comes back off McMillan but Lyttle is not quite in the right place to knock home the rebound as the final whistle blows
