Wright ensures draw in good run out at The Lamb

FT: Tamworth 1    1 Leicester City

11 July 2009After what seems like just a short break since The Lambs won the league title the first match of the 2009-10 preseason was soon upon everyone and with it came the visit of Leicester City to the Lamb who had already played Loughborough earlier in the day, utilising the whole of the Foxes squad across the two fixtures.
The only notable absence from the Lambs squad was Dominic Langdon who sat out the match through injury.

Foxes captain Matt Oakley fired in an early freekick from the right wing which Steve Howard headed wide of the near post.
Another good move on 8 ended with a wayward header from Ashley Chambers while at the other end Wright charged down a clearance and rolled the ball to Nicholson but he couldn’t get enough purchase on the shot.
The visitors had the obvious edge on skill on the ball but that didn’t stop the Lambs knocking the ball around the feet as they tried to move the ball forward.
Alcock was thankful for a forgiving linesman’s flag when he dropped the ball after catching it at height under pressure which would have seen Chambers with an open shot on goal.
Tom Shaw came close to opening the scoring on 27 with a dipping effort of the top of the bar from 30 yards and then felt the end of Robbie Neilson’s boot by the touch line on 33 in an unfortunately tangle as both players went for the same ball.
Howard blocked Alcock’s clearance on 35 and the ball fell kindly before going out for a
Leicester corner.
Nothing came of the flag kick but a few minutes later a good move ended with Howard just unable to direct a low ball past Alcock at the near post.
Tamworth ended the half with Pritchard looking tricky but unable to fire a shot on target and then a header from the same player looped over the bar after good work down the right.

HT: Tamworth 0    0 Leicester City

Early in the second half Burns ran through into the Lamb penalty area and set himself up with some good skill but his final shot was lacking and Alcock collected easily.
Sheridan produced some trickiness of his own on 48 setting up Nicholson in the process but the final shot was blocked and a corner won which Leicester
Bruno Berner opened the scoring on 53 with a delightful low tap past Alcock after a ball over the top of the Lambs defence saw him the only player able to react quickest and although his shot from the left of the area clipped the base of the post as it went in there was no doubt that the Leicester man deserved his goal. (0-1, 53 mins)
The goal brought a flurry of substitutions and this seemed to liven things up a bit as Pritchard tried his luck with a left foot half volley on 59 which went just wide.
A teasing high right wing cross from Rodman forced a
corner on 63 but it came to nothing.
City won one of their own on 69 which Pritchard worked out of defence looking for the run of Wright.
On 75 Howard blasted a half volley over the bar when it may have been easier to hit the target – the ball bouncing invitingly over the Lambs defence to set him up with what seemed like a certain finish from 18 yards.
Wylde cleared off the line from Chambers attempt at a lob from outside the area on 76 which had Alcock beaten hands down.
Parkes struck a strong right footed shot on 83 which struck Briscoe and went out for a corner but Howard was adjudged to have fouled as he went up for the header.
Then on 87 Nick Wright curled a superb goal in from outside the area which gave Pentney no chance to stop it as the ball floated over the keeper and into the back of the net. (1-1, 87)
