Lambs unbeaten run ends at Hinckley

FT: Hinckley United 2    1 Tamworth

06 October 2008

Tamworth's excellent run finally came to an end at The Marston Stadium on Monday night as a goal either side of the break from Leigh Platanauer saw the Lambs two goals down with 49 minutes gone. And although the side pulled on back via Bradley Pritchard with 15 remaining they almost, but ultimately failed to get another to rescue the tie.

In the first 25 minutes of the game Tamworth, with eight changes from Saturday's win over Hyde, were pushed back into their own half for the main part and struggled to get a grip on the game.
Will Puddy was perhaps the busiest of the Lambs players and Hinckley looked the most likely to score. The Lambs goalkeeper beat Leon Kelly to the ball and cleared with a quick thinking boot after Kelly had got the better of McAughtrie on 15.
Kelly then put a header on goal on 21 which Burgess hooked away to safety and from the corner Adam Webster's header was cleared by Law. From that corner Andy Hall found time to shoot but found Puddy in his line of sight and the keeper smothered his shot well.
Callum Lloyd got a shot on goal on the half hour mark and Puddy took the low drive, before The Lambs almost opened the scoring against the run of play.
A Hildreth freekick was flicked on by McAughtrie, only for Langdon to miss the target from 8 yards with a wayward left foot shot as the ball dropped invitingly.
But Langdon did what he is best at immediately after, denying the run of Hall with an excellently timed challenge as he bore down on goal.
Tamworth statred to show signs of coming into the game from then on but were stunned by a fantastic finish from Platnauer on 41, striking the ball from fully 30 yards sweetly in the back fo the net giving Puddy no chance. (0-1)
And a minute later Hall saw his shot deflected wildly and then strike the near post before going out for a corner.

HT: Hinckley United 1    0 Tamworth

Lambs boss Gary Mills made the first of three substitutions at half time - bringing Pritchard on for a frustrated Warburton - and despite a lively start to the half, Platnauer headed home a Hinckley corner on 49 to make it 0-2.
The inclusion of Alex Rodman and then Gareth Sheldon gave Tamworth a lot more options and the side were much more alive on the field, passing well and causing the home side some problems.
So it was no suprise when Pritchard finished a fine move on 75. Law took a throw on the left which Sheldon flicked on to Rodman who did the hardwork by beating his marker before squaring it, setting Pritchard up with a sidefooted finish from 10 yards. (1-2)
And a minute later Sheldon won a freekick 20 yards out. Hildreth recieved the ball in a well worked move which fooled the home side's defensive wall and although McAughtrie put the ball home after Hildreth's powerful low shot had been parried by MacKenzie the linesman's offside flag denied him the equaliser.
Hinckley then worked tremedously hard to preserve their lead and although McAughtrie managed a header at goal late on the home side progressed to the next round at The Lambs expense.
