A goal in each half sees Lambs through to next round

FT: Tamworth 2    0 Banbury United

30 September 2008Gary Mills fielded a much changed side for the Birmingham Senior Cup tie which welcomed Banbury United to The Lamb.

Banbury started the game at a canter but The Lambs soon found their feet on a damp surface and did their best to knock the ball around well and defended as required when the visitors pushed forward.
Hildreth saw a good drive blocked on 13 and a first Lambs corner came via Jones shortly after which was saved well by Murrell from Hildreth’s chip into the box looking for Boothe at the far post.
Another flag kick came on 17 via a searching cross from the right from Hildreth which head to be headed behind and Warburton was unlucky not to open the scoring – his shot deflected behind and Murrell punched the resultant corner clear of danger.
Banbury got the first real effort at goal on 20 via Bennett who struck a deflected shot over the bar for a corner from which saw Murphy clear away off the line after Stanbridge tried to get a shot through the crowd.
The opening goal came though, when
Sheridan then unleashed a screamer from fully 30 yards which gave Murrell no chance as it flew into the net unhindered off his right boot. (1-0, 23 mins)
Sheridan tired to lob Murrell from Law’s set up on 29 and was only inches away from doing just that but the ball landed on top of the net from his right wing effort.
Taylor then missed a golden chance to equalise on 30 when he robbed Burgess on the edge of the area before shooting wide of the far post from an ever decreasing angle.
Gordon forced a save from Bevan with a close range effort on 38 but it was nothing the Villa loanee keeper couldn’t handle and on 43 Gordon had an opportunity centre to goal but missed the target with his header.
Just before the break Gordon got a shot away which deflected just wide of the right hand upright for a corner and Warburton had to head it behind for another flag kick at the far post.

HT: Tamworth 1    0 Banbury United

Tamworth kicked off the second half towards the Castle End of the ground having made one substitution during the break but it was Banbury who got the first shot away, Morley trying his luck from distance, but shooting wide of the mark on 48.
A great header from Lea from Jones’ right wing ball was well saved by Murrell on 51 and
Tamworth won a corner from the parry. Hildreth drove the ball in looking for Sheridan, but a Puritans defender got their first and sent the ball high over his bar for another flag kick which came to nothing.
Bevan saved his defences blushes shortly after, denying the incoming Gordon with a quick boot and The Lambs broke through Lea who battled past his marker and squared for Hildreth to send the ball over the outstretched arms of Murrell and into the far corner for The Lambs second. (2-0, 53 mins)
Sheridan hit a low drive on 62 which Murrell did well do bat away to safety and shortly after a second Lambs sub was made with the hardworking Jones being replaced by Grant Roscorla.
On 79 Sean Gillon replaced Law, who had earlier taken a blow and required treatment and Roscorla needed a similar visit from physio Chris Leary on 80 after colliding with a defender and the hoardings behind the goal.
With no subs remaining tired legs started to show signs of cramp and Davies needed a stretch from the physio on 87 to help him see out the last few minutes in light showers but they didn’t have to wait long for the final whistle and a place in the last 16.
