The 'fat lady' has sung

FT: AFC Telford United 0    0 Tamworth

25 April 2009

All hold hands...

With both sides 'safe' - Tamworth having claimed the championship on Tuesday night, and Telford guaranteed a playoff place no matter what the outcome, there was was no suprise when the team line-ups were announced.
Gary Mills selected the regular back four and midfield, but changed things around up front, giving Sheldon and Wright a rest while Rob Smith fielded no less than 5 players who perhaps wouldn't normally feature in his starting eleven including one Wylde with excitment!debut to seventeen year old Scott Embrey.

The game itself despite being fast paced and full of passion was little to write home about though, although both keepers were tested during the 90 minutes and ex-Lamb Jimmy Turner did put the the ball in the net with a close range header from a corner inside the first few minutes only to see it ruled out for a blatant push on Danny Alcock.

Gaffer and his captainIn the second half, Tamworth pushed forward even more so when Gareth Sheldon took to the field - linking well with Stuart Nicholson - but Ryan Young was not going to be beaten and a draw was a fair result.
In the final throws of the game boss Gary Mills took to the field on the right of midfield to play out the final minutes of an excellent season and recieved a standing ovation from the travelling faithful in the process.

After the final whistle, as the Telford fans left the ground, the squad paraded the league trophy in front of their vociferous supporters and even had a go at outsinging them before the champagne corks popped once again.

The players and management eventually retired into the dressing room with the sounds of Queen's "We are the champions" resonating from inside and the fans boarded the coaches back to Tamworth were the party will undoutedly not stop for some time to come.
