Lambs take a point from the Impact Arena

FT: Alfreton Town 1    1 Tamworth

02 September 2008The Lambs made the short journey up the M1 to one of Gary Mills previous club as manager, looking to extend their unbeaten run to 5 games and keep themselves in the upper echelons of the table ahead of a potentially tough game against Harrogate at the weekend.

Mills was able to submit a carbon copy teamsheet from the weekends away victory over Fleetwood, including subs, as, as the old saying goes, why change a winning team.

Tamworth started well, and were definitely in control in the opening encounters.
Sheldon almost found Wright but the chance was cleared and hard work from Rodman won him an early corner but from it, Wylde cleared the fence surrounding the ground with his shot from distance.
Two freekicks came quickly but both times Foster was unable to accurately find the target man.
Alfreton almost took the lead on 13 when Bowler saw his shot deflected off Wylde and Puddy dropped the ball at height before McAughtrie cleared.
Then as play raced to the other end, Foster looked up from 20 yards and unleashed an unstoppable shot into the top corner with his right boot to give the Lambs the lead (1-0, 14 mins)
Tamworth started to look for their second goal, but Wylde picked up a yellow card for an innocuous challenge after a much harder tackle on Rodmam had gone unpunished minutes earlier.
Pritchard appeared to be brought down by Ellender in the box on 35 but the referee was having none of it and a minute or so later some pressure from an ever growing Alfreton attack paid off as Fortune-West’s header went in from Ellender’s flick on despite the best efforts of Foster to clear it from the danger area. (1-1, 37 mins).
Alfreton’s Muirhead did well to ride three tackles on route to a left wing cross shortly before the break but his ball into the box was expertly taken by Puddy in the last action of the first half.

HT: Alfreton Town 1    1 Tamworth

Despite the lack of any more goals, Tamworth will look back on the second half and wonder how they didn’t win the game.
They dominated the majority of proceedings and forced keeper Evans to defend his goal in a variety of ways.
Rodman and Sheldon both got good shots in early on in the second period, Smith beat the keeper to the ball from a Foster freekick but headed well off target and Smith then right footed a shot at Evans which he saved. From the save Sheldon picked up the loose ball and squared for Pritchard but McIntosh was just that bit quicker than the Lambs midfielder and cleared the chance away.
Rodman struck over the bar on 73 and Wright beat the keeper to the ball a minute later with both of them ending up by the left hand throw line. Wright did well to get back past the stranded custodian but found his route to goal blocked by defenders and a minute later Foster tried to recreate his earlier strike but missed the crossbar by a couple of feet.
The then best chance of the second half saw Evans produce a reflex stop from Wright after four shots came into the area first through Wright, then Foster, Wright’s forced reflex save and finally Pritchard had a chance but couldn’t make it count.
There were periods where Alfreton looked lively but their main threat came through the nippy Muirhead who continued to take players on but failed to produce an end product.
Late into the half Wright put a shot well off target and a back heel from the same player put Lyttle through down the right wing but his low cross into the danger area was just out of reach of The Lambs who had to settle for a point.
