Lambs go through

FT: Tamworth 2    1 Stafford Rangers

05 February 2008

After coming back from a goal down, having initially lead the game at Martson Road on Saturday Gary Mills’ Lambs welcomed Staffordshire rivals Stafford Rangers to The Lamb for a replay of their third round FA Trophy tie with £6,000 and a home game tie against Aldershot in the Quarter Finals of the competition up for grabs to the winners.

An early chance when Jamie Reed received the ball from Nick Wright only to be denied a close range finish by Danny Alcock and seconds later Wright hit the post after advancing on goal and beating Alcock with his shot only for Djoumin Sangare to clear the rebound off the line.
Stafford the advanced but missed the target twice Ross Draper headed wide and then the same player sent his shot the same way after linking play from Damion Jarrett and Dolapo Olaoye.
Gareth Sheldon fired a free kick into the danger area on 6 but Dave Bampton’s header after a deceiving bounce was nodded away by Chris Flynn for a corner which was too hard to Bampton to control past the far post.
A close range strike at the near post was blocked for a Lambs corner on 8 and 30 seconds later Jake Sheridan’s low ball in from the flag kick was put wide by Wright under pressure in the six yard box.
Reed was then denied by a last ditch tackle as both he and Wright tried to get a shot away.
Chris Nurse then put the ball in the net from 25 yards with a left foot volley on 12 but Wright’s ball from the bye-line had already been flagged as going out of play and the strike was ruled out
Wayne Daniel struck low at Cisak from 25 yards which was easy for the home ‘keeper to collect before Tamworth broke again and Wright won a corner.
Light turned into heavy rain around the quarter of an hour mark but that didn’t stop Sheldon feeding Wright with the outside of his boot only for the offside flag to be shown as he advanced toward goal
Reed curled a low shot at Alcock on 17 from a Lambs freekick which the visiting custodian pushed out for a corner which came to nothing.
Continuing Lambs pressure penned Stafford back but on 22 Draper peeled away from his marker and got a shot away at goal which curled wide of the left hand upright and out for a goalkick.
Wright sprinted as if his life depended on it on 26 to keep the ball in play and managed to cut it back but neither Reed nor Bampton (who took the ball full on as it was cleared) could connect and open the scoring.
Sheldon struck a shot at goal on 34 only for Alcock to tip it onto the bar and from the rebound Nurse headed over under pressure as the ball dropped.
Evans was tripped as he struck a shot from 35 yards high over the bar allowing Sheldon a freekick which was 9only partially cleared and Reed was brought down 25 yards out on the left hand side this time giving Sheldon another free strike which went straight into the wall.
Reed made a darting run down the right, cut in and shot with the outside of his right boot, but missed the target as the home fans wondered how long it would be until they scored. And they didn’t have to wait long as Wright sprinted clear of the Stafford defence to slot home past Alcock on 39 to give The Lambs a deserved lead (1-0)
Alcock punched clear a Lambs freekick but was helpess to stop Nurse heading home Des Lyttle’s return ball into the area. (2-0)
Michael Briscoe cleared a rare Stafford effort from Jarrett in added time at the end of the half

The second half started at a slightly slower pace to the first and Tamworth were given a scare early on when the ball ended up in Cisak’s net but the play was brought back for offside and Jarrett tried his luck on 55 but cleared the stand behind the Meadow Street goal from distance.
Tamworth hit back with timely challenges and good passing movement which the home crowd in turn responded to cheering every pass and generating some welcome noise from the Shed.
Wright was beaten to a far post header from Lyttle’s cross on 65 by Daniel while at the other end a corner flashed across the face of the Lambs goal to safety on 67.
Evans conceded a corner on 68 which was put long but fired back into the area and the same player headed the danger away for another flag kick which Bampton then cleared followed by Briscoe, Langdon and Wright – all putting some body part or another in the way, but still Stafford pushed forward and had possession longer than any previous spell which eventually earned them a goal on 73.
Flynn knocked the ball home from close range at the far post after a Jarrett freekick was headed back into the danger area by Sangare. (2-1)
There were loud shouts for handball form the visiting fans on 78 when Evans blocked a shot and Cisak punched the resultant corner wide for a flag kick on the other side which he then collected.
Flynn tried a diving header with 2 remaining which Cisak was equal to as the visitors pushed on for a equaliser as five minutes added time was shown which Tamworth saw out to go through to the Quarter Finals.
