Lambs fall in final game to local rivals

FT: 1    0 Tamworth

26 April 2008

Tamworth travelled to

Liberty Way
for their final game of the 2007-08 season looking for a win against local rivals Nuneaton Borough.

Around 300 Lambs fans made the short journey to the ‘new’ ground – 10 years since their last trip to Nuneaton at their previous Manor Park home.

Tamworth started the game attacking Darren Acton in the ‘Boro goal who took up his place with his back to the travelling faithful and was called into action after just six minutes when Jonti Richter, in for the recovering–from-injury Jake Sheridan, hit a volley at goal and Acton conceded a corner which won The Lambs two further flag kicks but nothing came of them.
On 9 came an opening for the home side – Des Lyttle headed behind Simon Travis’ right wing cross and from the corner Gavin Cowan brought out the best in Alex Cisak who parried his header over the bar. From the resultant corner Tom Curtis fed Connor Franklin who set up Alex Rodman who saw his header once again foiled by a great save by was foiled by Cisak.
A jinking run came from Bradley Pritchard on 15 but he failed to get a decent shot away but the hoem side were awarded a free shot at goal on 18 when Dave Bampton brought down Pritchard in the area.
However, captain Tom Curtis’ penalty was expertly saved by Cisak down low to his left, to keep the game goalless.
Tamworth responded and Gareth Sheldon was unlucky with a 25 yard shot that rattled the bar heavily before an injury to Bampton brought Sheridan into play just short of the half hour mark.
On 41 Rodman sent over an inch perfect right wing cross for Pritchard to try a spectacular bicycle kick at goal, but he cleared the cross bar with his effort and Cowan directed a far post header out past the opposite stick just before the break as the home side finished the half on top of proceedings.

HT: 0-0

Richter fed Foster a couple of minutes into the second period only for the Lambs captain to miss-time his first time volley wide of the mark and Tamworth continued to create half chances.
But Nuneaton were soon pressing again and Travis fed Pritchard on 56 which again brought a good save from Cisak to deny the nippy striker.
The on 70 minutes came the deciding strike. Hesitancy in the Lambs defence allowed Rodman a clear sight at goal and his fired low into the near post to give Nuneaton the lead.
The final 15 minutes or so were unsurprisingly less hectic than the 75 before them, although Adie Smith stopped Matty Collins advancing on Cisak with a very well timed tackle from behind on 80 and Pritchard twice looked for the target but missed on both occasions before the final whistle went on the game, and ended the season.
