Lambs sign off at home with a good point

FT: Tamworth 1    1 Harrogate Town

22 April 2008

The Lambs faced their second promotion chasing opponents in as many games as they welcomed Harrogate Town to The Lamb.
Michael Briscoe was the only enforced change to the side that suffered defeat at Barrow where the virtual ever present defender broke his arm at the weekend, with Graeme Law coming in.

Des Lyttle found himself in a central defensive roll with Law in the right spot and both sides started the game fairly evenly.
Bouyed on by a small (approx. 30) but loud following the visitors won a free kick which Nathan Pete struck and forced Alex Cisak to tip over the bar. Harrogate failed to capitalise on the corner and Tamworth broke, with the ball falling for Nick Wright who cut into the box but blasted over the bar on 6.
The Lambs won a corner on 9 but it came to nothing.
Danny Holland struck the post with a rasping drive on 12 and Danny Lowe’s follow up deflected off Chrsi Nurse for a corner which Mark Hume just failed to connect to at the fair post.
A cross into the area was met by the head of Hume on 14 and Holland sprinted in to follow up but missed the ball, as did Cisak and the chance went as the ball went out a couple of feet past the post.
At the other end Nurse blasted a neat one-two with Gareth Sheldon over the bar on 18 from 10- yards.
Former Lamb Steve Burton came into the fray for an injured Roy Hunter on 25 before Hume headed wide from a corner shortly after.
Cisak was a few feet away from getting on the score sheet on 27 with a monster of a clearance that bounced into Jon McLaughlin’s arms a yard off the goal line, before the Lambs keeper stopped a drive from Jamie Price at full stretch a minute or so later.
Wright took an extra touch and squandered a good chance to shoot from the edge of the area on the half hour mark and another good run ended with a cross collected by McLaughlin in the next move.
A well timed tackle denied Holland a run at goal from a well judged long ball out of the Harrogate midfield on 33
Sheldon and Wright combined to give the former a shot on the angle on 37 which McLaughlin was equal to.
There was a break in play as Sheridan received treatment for an injury with five to go in the half and he came back on but looked to be struggling and shortly after Langdon picked up the first booking of the game.
As one minute added time was shown Price unleashed a thumping drive which brought out the best in Cisak and ensured the half finished goalless.

HT: 0-0

Jonti Richter replaced Sheridan in a straight swap on the left wing and both sides had early half chances but were off target both times.
Langdon dropped a curling cross onto Sheldon’s head on 49 which just cleared the bar.
Howard though he had bagged the opening goal after Burton’s initial shot was deflected to Hume who shot but saw the ball pop up for Howard to nod over the Lambs keeper, but Cisak somehow managed to claw the ball off the line and The Lambs survived.
Hume nodded the ball into the path of Burton who struck thee last defender and his own man with his close range shot on 53 as the visitors exerted some pressure which brought out another fine save from Cisak and a clearance off the line from Law on 55 from another Hume header.
Richter was brought down en-route to goal on the edge of the area which had Lambs fans puzzled as to why no card was shown to Price who appeared to be the last man although Richter did pick up a card for lashing out while on the floor.
And Sheldon struck the freekick right footed and duly hit the back of the net to give Tamworth the lead with his twelfth goal of the season. 1-0
Cisak denied Chris Bettney’s run into the box on 62 with a blocking dive as he sprinted through and although Harrogate tried to push forward Tamworth were for the most part working hard to stop the threat as and when required.
A couple of good attempts at goal came with 15 to go – the first a header from Dave Bampton was just off target and Sheldon’s follow up when the ball came out to him went agonisingly over the woodwork.
But Hume finished a good move from close range on 77 to level the tie from Gareth Grant’s left wing through ball (1-1)
Nurse mopped up the loose ends from Burton’s far post header on 81 and Price crossed for Hume at the far post on 88 but his header was wide of the mark.
Cisak produced another good stop in a crowded area shortly after and Holland missed getting a low far post header on target on 89.
Three minutes added time was shown in the final home game of the season which gave The Lambs a point, and left Harrogate to battle it out with Barrow and Southport in their respective final fixtures for a play off place.
