Lambs go through

FT: Tamworth 2    1

17 October 2006

Mark Cooper’s Lambs welcomed local rivals Stafford Rangers to The Lamb for their Staffs Senior Cup tie and made four changes to the side that were defeated at Halifax on Saturday. Ex-Nuneaton keeper Dave Clarke made his Lambs debut between the posts, while Jon Stevenson, Kyle Storer and Matt Williams came in for Taiwo Atieno, Thomas Harban and John McGrath.

On the other side of the coin Stafford featured just one in their starting eleven that drew 0-0 at The Lamb 10 days earlier in the Nationwide Conference – ex-Lamb Brian Quailey.

Stafford came close to opening the scoring twice in the opening 12 minutes but Steve Hopkinson and Danny Edwards both shot wide of the target.
A good turn and run by Stevenson on 19 set up Thomas with a difficult attempt at goal, and although he beat his man the
Stafford defence were there in numbers to block his effort.
On 37 minutes Stevenson headed straight at Stafford ‘keeper Chris Brown after a searching cross from the right by Thomas almost found the head of Kyle Storer and forced Brown to be quick with his reactions when Stevenson followed in behind.
A flowing Lambs move, opening the Lambs account on 42, ended with Adie Smith playing a one-two with Kyle Storer and the youngster struck low and hard into the corner of the goal from 20 yards. (1-0)
HT: 1-0
Tamworth started the second half brightly but on 55 minutes Stafford hit back from a free kick. David Oldfield curled his right footed strike into the top corner giving Clarke no chance. (1-1)
And on 58 Rangers almost took the lead, but Edwards was denied by the width of the far post after Christian Dacres had split the Lambs defence from the halfway line.
But
Tamworth soon hit back via a Steve Burton strike. Stevenson had gone down in the area but The Lambs played on a Burton smashed home right footed from the edge of the area. (2-1)
Michael Touhy and
Burton then got shots on target in the space of 3 minutes but both times Brown was equal to their shots.
Thomas left fly from a rebound out of the Rangers area but saw his shot charged away on 85 and Adie Smith broke through but the visiting keeper’s legs denied him while at the other end Clarke pushed a late effort around his post.
FT: 2-1
