New boys give Lambs a trip to the seaside

FT: Tamworth 3    1 Altrincham

22 October 2005

Lambs' boss Mark Cooper made three changes from the side that beat Gravesend last weekend, two of them enforced. With both James Dormand and Matt Redmile nursing slight injuries, Mark Gayle took his place between the posts, and new loan signing Trevor Robinson from Millwall made his debut. The other change was that of Tris Whitman being replaced by James Francis who had impressed in the Conference win seven days earlier.

With all eyes on the £10,000 prize, league form and placings went out of the window in the first game between the two sides in their history.

As in last week's league tie against Gravesend, neither side managed to get a shot in on their opponents' goal in the opening encounters. Robinson looked comfortable on the ball down the left wing and Edwards also showed signs as The Lambs tried to push forward down the flanks, but it was the visitors who had the first clear cut chance with Colin Little having a shot blocked in the 20th minute.

Little tried his luck again in the 27th minute after dispossessing Adie Smith out side the area but saw his shot fly wide of the target.

A flowing Lambs' move just after the 30 minute mark produced their first effort on target, but Edwards’ header from Robinson's left wing cross looped easily for Stuart Coburn in the Altrincham goal. And a long range effort from Carl Heggs barely troubled Coburn on 35.

Colin Potts fiercely struck a shot at the Lambs' goal after an Aaron Brown yellow card challenge gave Altrincham a dubious free kick but Heggs was well positioned to block the effort and Tamworth dealt with the corner effectively.

Altrincham looked the more likely to break the deadlock as the first half drew to a close and the half time whistle with Lutel James looking the most threatening.

HT: 0-0

Robinson carved an opening down the left wing on 52 but Heggs was unable to get a clean strike on the ball with two defenders around him.

Four minutes later Robinson made a great run from the right and unleashed an unstoppable left foot shot from 20 yards to give the Lambs the lead and it was almost doubled two minutes later when Heggs forced Coburn into a point blank save following a long ball out of defence.

The scores levelled in the 65th minute when Potts crossed totally unmarked and unchallenged from the right and Adie Smith put through his own net trying to clear. A distinct lack of Tamworth defending allowed Potts a clear strike on goal minutes later but his effort was easily taken by Gayle.

Kyle Storer forced Coburn to tip over his bar with a deft chip from the edge of the area on 70 as the Lambs looked to get their noses back in front but Gayle was forced to do the same from a Peter Band effort on 72.

Edwards then went close with a self made turn and shot in the area but the ball went wide of the near post.

Following a rash tackle, Storer picked up The Lambs' 4th yellow card of the game on 81 minutes and after a melee involving most of both sides, Heggs also found his name in the referee's note book.
Edwards' no. 1
Tamworth regained the lead in the 84th minute when Jake Edwards headed home the lose ball following a flicked on free kick taken by Graham Ward. The flick on had been well saved by Coburn but popped up invitingly for the on-loan Exter striker to score his first goal in a Lambs' shirt.

A fantastic run down the left and low cross by Edwards set up sub Tris Whitman but his shot was blocked and following another good move seconds later Adie Smith crossed from the right for Edwards to leap and power home his second and the Lambs' third with a close range header.

Sub striker Bob Taylor went within a whisker of making it four in stoppage time from a Whitman cross
