Brave Lambs beaten by York

FT: Tamworth 0    3 York City

27 September 2005

Tamworth v York City

The Lambs fell to a home defeat against the Minstermen despite a hardworking and passionate display that unfortunately proved fruitless.

"I will be looking for more of the same from the lads on Saturday," said Cooper after the game, "No one can say we didn't battle or deserve something out of it. I thought Carl Heggs was influential and got the players going. But were are doing something not quite right and that is - not scoring goals. We had a number of chances and on another day would have put two or three away."

Boss Cooper made two changes from the side that lost to Woking on Saturday – Bob Taylor being replaced by Carl Heggs and Jimmy Turner making way for Adie Smith, returning from a foot injury.
But just prior to kick off Dave Bampton who was initially named in the starting eleven was ruled out in the pre-match warm up and Turner took his place leaving The Lambs with just 4 subs.

In the opening exchanges there was an early chance for Tamworth when Tris Whitman latched onto ball from Matt Redmile in the right of penalty area but his shot was saved at the near post.

Bryan Stewart hit a shot over the bar on 6 minutes then forced a corner from a good run minutes later but a battling and hungry display by the Lambs ensured the danger was cleared.

A thirteenth minute free kick from Graham Ward just evaded the head of Redmile as Tamworth took the game to The Minstermen with Heggs and Francis both looking lively.

But for all their good work Tamworth were shown up at the back in the 27th minute when Aaron Brown was caught by Bishop who flicked the ball hopefully over the defence and Clayton Donaldson made no mistake at the second attempt.

James Francis almost made immediate amends from Carl Heggs low cross from the left, but fired agonisingly wide from 10 yards.

Some more positive Lambs play almost produced a goal shortly after but Heggs was beaten to the ball by the fist of York keeper Chris Porter and Scott Stamps fired straight at the visiting custodian from the resulting corner.
Goal ruled out and MOM for Whitman
Tris Whitman’s deflected shot in first half stoppage time almost produced and equaliser but went out for a corner and from the flag kick Matt Redmile headed agonisingly wide at the far post.

HT 0-1

Despite showing the same passion at the start of the second half, Tamworth again showed a lapse of concentration from a mix up with a throw in and allowed Mark Convery to shoot. When the ball flicked high from Dormand’s save Donaldson made no mistake with a close range header on 57.

Tamworth almost found a way back seconds after the restart but Tris Whitman’s header was disallowed for offside following a strong attacking move.

Then Convery was allowed far too much time to shoot from long range in the 62nd minute and despite a good one handed save by Dormand the ball hit one post and rolled in at the other to make it 3 for the visitors.

With nothing to lose, Cooper gambled on three up front in the 64th minute bringing off Mansram for Bob Taylor.

York came forward on 74 but Donaldson missed out on his hat trick when he miscued his shot and the ball went wide from close range. And minutes later Donaldson went one on one with Dormand at a tight angle but the Lambs keeper did well to block his effort which was eventually cleared.

And once again Tamworth just failed to get on the scoreline at the death when substitute Kyle Storer headed over.

FT 0-3

"We played well and York will know they have had a good game tonight. The fans should also be proud of the lads as they battled hard and showed commitment. There is a long way to go and if we keep playing like that week in week out the tide will turn sooner rather than later."
