Understrength Lambs crash out of GLS Cup
08 February 2005
Fielding an unfamiliar starting eleven didn't help the Lambs cause but Mark Cooper's side matched the home side for the first half 20 minutes.
However, a clumsy challenge on Ryan Price left him struggling and Lee McEvilly scored a 25 yard thunderbolt on 25 minutes (0-1) followed by a well worked move leading to tap in for Paul Mullin at the far post four minutes later. 0-2 John Smith hit the crossbar minutes prior to the opening goal and Mullin missed McEvilly’s set up at the far post seconds after their second as the small number of travelling fans started to fear the worst.
Chris Neal replaced Price on the half hour mark and a Mark Cooper “trademark” free kick almost pulled one back two minutes before the break but it flew just wide.
However, 75 seconds after the restart McEvilly made it 0-3 finishing Ian Craney’s move from 6 yards out and Rory Prendergast was allowed time and space to waltz through the Lambs defence and fire home for his first and Stanley’s fourth (0-4) on 51 before doubling his tally 5 minutes later with a right foot strike. (0-5)
Tamworth were given room to play at 5-0 down and the inclusion of Bob Taylor almost produced a goal or two with Tris Whitman and Mark Turner also going close in the last half hour, but there were still enough chances at the other end for the margin of victory to have been even wider on a disappointing if not entirely unsurprising night.
