A Stirling Performance v Northwich(!)

FT: Tamworth 3    0 Northwich Victoria

12 March 2005

Tamworth took a step closer to Conference safety with their first league win since the end of January against an in form Northwich side.

Lambs' boss Mark Cooper unleashed his secret weapon Jude Stirling, signed just 24 hours earlier, and it was the former Luton player's exocet throw that gave the home side the advantage just two minutes in. Matt Redmile met his 30-yard launch with a far post header into the bottom corner to give the home side the lead.

Redmile heads home Stirling's exocetNorthwich looked like they might get back into the game with some neat passing but fell further behind just before the half hour mark when Karl Rose’s deflected shot ran through to Louie Soares who made no mistake with a right foot drive from six yards out.

Former Northwich frontman Tris Whitman’s parried shot hit the woodwork after the restart and Cooper forced Ben Connett in the visitors' goal to tip over seconds later as the Lambs went in search of another goal.

It came on 57 minutes after good work by veteran striker Bob Taylor whose shot proved to much for Connett who, with the help of Northwich defender Peter Band, put the ball over his own line.

The Vics' Jon Allan had a penalty appeal turned down with 25 minutes to go, but the Lambs and in particular Whitman continued to trouble the visitors. The nippy striker made a mazy run but shot wide and then set up substitute Clint Marcelle but the former Trinidad and Tobago striker saw his close range effort on goal blocked and then shot wide from the rebound.

Cooper was more than pleased with his side’s three points after the final whistle:
“It wasn’t pretty and the wind didn’t help in the first half, but Jude’s throw was exactly what we had hoped for and gave us an early lead.
"I thought we perhaps should have scored more in the second half but no matter as it means we have edged further away from the relegation pack and closer to safety.”
