Lambs progress in BSC on penalties

FT: Tamworth 1    1 Birmingham City

29 October 2019

In a departure from League action and FA Cup or Trophy competitions, Tamworth welcomed Birmingham City’s U23 side to The Lamb for the 1st Round of the Birmingham County FA Senior Cup.
The Lambs made a few changes to the starting eleven and there were a few less familiar faces on the bench too, while highly respected youngster and former Lamb loanee Jack Concannon plus local lad Ryan Stirk featured for the visitors.
The visitors kicked off with Tamworth attacking the Meadow Street end in the first period.
On 7 Hoenes released Reid through the left channel and he shot forced Ramos into a blocking save. At the other end Concannon made a surging run in to space in the middle of the Lambs defence and his shot was batted away by Walton but only as far as Stirk who finished with ease at the far post (0-1, 9 mins)
The visitors Reid lofted a shot over the Lambs crossbar on 11 and Creaney was booked for a blatant trip of the Blues midfielder who went past him in the center of the park on 19.
Roberts struck from distance on the left on 25 and forced Walton to protect his goal at head height.
A rare Lambs chance came just after the half hour mark as Hoenes and Creaney combined but the speed and skill of the visitors was evident from front to back.
A trip on Yafai by Bajrami set up Clement with a freekick 25 yards from goal on 38 and Ramos punched it clear of Yafai’s presence on the edge of the six yard box.
Creaney and Hoenes nearly combined on 43 but City cleared and raced to the other end where Concannon rifled his shot low and wide of the mark in the final action of the first half.

HT: Tamworth 0    1 Birmingham City

Tamworth got the game back underway as news of a Brexit themed General Election being called on December 12 floated around the ground for a different game of Reds v Blues!
Concannon struck a low shot at Walton on 48 which the keeper smothered, and then a ball from Creaney saw Hoenes run into the area with the ball at his feet and he finished with a powerful shot past Ramos for the equaliser (1-1, 51 mins)
After a booking for Roberts Tamworth kept up the pressure and forced a corner on 53 which Frances headed back at goal past the far post into Ramos’ grasp.
Hurst’s low shot didn’t really trouble Walton on 57 and at the other end Creaney lifted the ball ove the Blues defence for Hoenes but his lob was taken at height by Ramos.
Hoenes went through again on 59 but again Ramos was in no mood to be beaten.
On 65, Concannon combined with Stirk for the former to strike to the right of the right hand upright, just wide of the mark, and then Hurst did similarly on 67.
A foul on Concannon set up the same player with a deadball from 20 yards out on 76 but The Blues player skied his freekick over the Meadow Street End stand.
Then a foul by Magunda on Traore set the visitors up with another opportunity, this time from a little close and to the left of the D.
Stirk tried his luck this time and also cleared the target by some distance.
A cross from the left on 85 from Hoenes was met by Creaney on the volley, but he was unable to keep the ball down and it span off his boot up and over the frame of the goal from 8 yards out.
The Blues bench was shown a card on 89 and the clock ticked round into added time with penalties looming.
Tamworth progressed 5-3 on penalties with Magunda, Yafai, Hoenes, Fry and Creaney all scoring from the spot.
Stirk, Redmond and Hurst scored for Blues but Concannon’s penalty (the second Blues one) was saved and The Lambs will travel to Coleshill in the next round.
