Lambs back to Winning Ways

FT: Tamworth 3    0 AFC Rushden and Diamonds

15 October 2019

Jordan Gough capped his 50th appearance in a Tamworth shirt with the opening goal as Tamworth bounced back from Saturday’s defeat to Biggleswade Town. Gary Smith and Andrew Danylyzsyn made four changes from the weekend as Rashaan Frances, Tyrell Waite, Greg Kaziboni and Aaron Forde were all handed starts. Tamworth looked bright in the early stages and might have been frustrated not to take the lead in the 13th minute when Bilal Yafai hit a rasping drive from 20-yards that was tipped over by Niall Cooper. The resulting corner was cleared but the ball found its way back out to the left-hand side for Ryan Beswick to fire a low cross to the near post for Waite to steer the ball over. Four minutes later, Greg Kaziboni’s jinking run almost ended in the winger opening the scoring, but his low shot was well held by Cooper. Yafai had a gilt-edged chance to put the Lambs in front on the half hour mark. After finding himself in space six yards out, he stabbed wide when he really should have scored. That chance produced encouragement from the Tamworth faithful who were desperate to see their dominance turned into goals. They didn’t have long to wait. After Jas Singh saved Ryan Dover’s effort at one end, he started an attack that saw Jordan Gough make space in the box to calmly fire the Lambs ahead (1-0). Two minutes before the interval, another excellent passing move paid dividends for the home side. Ryan Beswick played the killer pass through to Waite who stepped back and had his low shot deflected into the top corner to give the Lambs deserved daylight at the break (2-0).

The visitors looked determined to make a game of it after the break and came flying out of the traps – Ben Acquaye went on a marauding run down the right and cut inside to unleash a shot low to Singh’s left but he touched it behind. Acquaye was at it again on the hour mark as he played in a pinpoint cross for Jack Bowen, but the Diamonds striker could only head into the arms of Singh from six yards out. Tamworth had to bide their time in the second half and almost grabbed another from a counter attack. A visitors’ corner was cleared to Waite who carried the ball from midway inside the opponent’s half before laying it on for Kaziboni whose left-foot shot whistled over the bar. After that shot the game turned scrappy with neither side creating any clear-cut chances. Tamworth introduced Rhys Hoenes and Henri Wilder as they looked to see out a well-deserved victory. But it was Waite who almost made it three after a run down the left – shooting high and wide from a narrow angle. In the 76th minute, Tamworth were handed a chance to put the game beyond doubt. Obeng was brought down in the box which meant skipper Ryan Beswick spotted up the penalty which he dispatched powerfully and with ease (3-0). With two minutes left on the clock, the visitors thought they had a consolation courtesy of Acquaye, but he was adjudged offside and his close-range finish was ruled out. The result sees Tamworth rise five places to second in the table – a point behind leaders Coalville Town.
