Lambs and Saints share the points

FT: St Ives Town 1    1 Tamworth

10 August 2019

The Lambs travelled to Westwood Road for the second consecutive season and arrived with similar expectation to 12 months previously. Only one player featured in the starting eleven from the 1-0 defeat under Mike Fowler with Jas Singh in goal once again.
Tyrell Waite had started before but was on the bench, while Charlie Shaw was unavailable through injury.
The remaining 13 members of the squad were all new to Tamworth from an official appearance perspective, although the previous few weeks had already shown how hard bosses Gary Smith and Andrew Danylyszyn had worked to get the new squad ready during pre-season.

St Ives kicked off into the wind in the first half with The Lambs sporting their new fluorescent green away kit. Creaney was brought down on the left inside the second minute and Beswick’s ball into the area was just missed by three Lambs players before skipping out for a goal kick Gough spotted a half chance on 7, lofting a deep ball towards goal from the left but Conway was happy to see it drop onto his net.
A two footed challenge by Wood on Creaney failed to earn him a booking on 13 and Beswick stepped up with the deadball from 30 a superb finish into the top right corner to make it 1-0 on 14.
On the rare occasions that the home forward line tried to break through Rowe-Turner and Magunda prevented their passage and Tamworth continued to work the ball on the floor as much as possible.
Obeng hit a shot from 12 yards that came back out to Creaney on 24 and his powerful effort from the edge of the box may have been pushed onto the bar by the keeper before being cleared.
Creaney and Wilson received a talking to from the referee on 27 after a clash on the halfway line but the resultant freekick was nodded behind by Gough for a corner on the right.
Johnson met the flagkick with a header that Singh dropped to smother, and he released Hoenes over the halfway line but Conway rushed out to head it away.
St Ives were awarded a freekick on the left of the area on 30 and Ward struck it into the box left footed. It was not dealt with and Wilson pulled it back for Kelly to fire home through the crowded box past Singh (1-1, 30 mins)
A Beswick corner on the left on 34 was met by the head of Creaney, but the striker couldn’t keep it down and it failed to trouble Conway.
Cox dealt with a danger ball into the area that Forde tried to get his head onto and then Snelus hit one from long range that wasn’t that far away from beating Singh.
At the other end Cox got his head onto a deep cross but directed his effort just wide of the mark. Two minutes added time were shown at the end of the half and with it came a Saints freekick from 35 yards.
Parker sent it into the area and eventually it fell to Johnson who put the ball wide.
Play continued and Forde had a direct shot at Singh which the keeper parried for a corner which was then cleared to the other end and Hoenes forced a corner on the left. Beswick’s dead ball was punched down and eventually cleared as the half time whistle blew.

HT: St Ives Town 1    1 Tamworth

Tamworth restarted proceedings after a fair amount of wind blown tree debris had been cleared from Conway’s end of the pitch. Beswick was booked for dissent on 49 after he’d been called over by the referee.
Obeng set up Fry with a cheeky lofted shot over he keeper on 52 but it was headed off the line by the covering defender and from the corner Creaney headed straight at Conway who caught it at the second attempt.
A low shot from Parker rolled harmlessly wide of Singh left hand post on 55 as the home side enjoyed a spell of possession.
A freekick was then awarded inside the Lambs half and Ward planted it onto the head of Cox and Tamworth tried to clear their lines.
Conway flapped at a deep ball into the box on 59 but The Lambs couldn’t capitalise and St Ives got rid of the danger as quickly as it had appeared.
Rowe-Turner picked up a booking on 62 for a tussle contesting a corner and from the flag kick Snelus was also booked for blocking Singh.
Play switched to the other end and a corner was the result for Tamworth but it came to nothing due to an infringement in the box after Beswick had struck it. Creaney was brought down for the umpteenth time and the deadball found Waite on 68 who pulled it into the path of Yafai but his shot under pressure went over the bar from 6 yards.
The Saints forced a corner on 70 and headed the ball into the side netting as it swirled around in the unrelenting wind. Rowe-Turner was penalised in the St Ives top left corner of the pitch on 77 and from the freekick Ward found the head of Wood but he was way off target.
There was a stoppage in play while Magunda received treatment on 80 and he was replaced by Wilder for the final 10 minutes and Creaney made way for Wilder shortly after.
St Ives were awarded a couple of freekicks in the final few minutes but neither went anywhere close to Singh’s goal and Tamworth continued to work to try and get mire than a point from the opening match and Beswick blocked Snaith 25 yards out in a central position on 87 but Kelly fired it straight at Singh.
In added time Cox’s ball in was headed over the bar by some distance by Yafai, and at the other end Cox’s mis-clearance gave St Ives a corner on the left.
Gough headed it away and the whistle blew after the throw had been taken with the sides sharing the spoils.
