Rejuvenated Lambs see red and pay the penatly

FT: Alfreton Town 2    1 Tamworth

10 February 2018

After a turbulent week at The Lamb, Mike Fowler took charge at a wet and windy North Street and selected his first team bringing new striker Akwasi Asante into the squad while loanee Kyron Stabana took a spot on the bench.

Tamworth got the game underway, attacking up the Impact Arena hill and in the third minute verma struck from 20 yards but it was always rising over the bar and Elliot got a touch on it to help it’s on it’s way. The corner came to nothing though as a foul was spotted in the box.
Jennings crossed from the right onto the head of Sharp on 9 but his header was off target and on 13 Keane flicked the ball through to Daniels but his cross box ball was too long for his teammates.
Knights released Asante towards the edge of the area on 14 but his first touch was heavy on a slippy surface and then Burns crossed from the right onto the head of the striker but it went just wide of the mark past the near post.
A foul by Jones on Daniels in the D on the edge of the area and the former Lamb stepped up to take the freekick on 18 but it struck the wall and ballooned up and over the bar for a corner on the left.
Asante forced a corner with a low drive from the left of the box on 20 but the flag kick was booted away.
Kettle threaded the ball to Asante on 26 and his curling shot was deflected and blocked but Knights pounced on it, slipped as he shot and it rolled into the far corner past Elliott to give The Lambs the lead (1-0, 26 mins)
A deep cross from the right from Wood drifted onto the roof of Steven’s net on 29 as Alfreton pushed down the hill to try and get back into the game quickly.
Strong defending from The Lambs prevented Allen and Daniels on 35 and Kettle conceded a freekick on 36 which Daniels struck beautifully into the top right corner (1-1, 36 mins)
Knights chipped a freekick into the box on 39 and Verma’s header went just wide of the right hand upright.
Good work from Asante turned the home defence inside out and his shot skipped up for Burns but he was offside when his header went well wide of the target.
Daniels hit a hopeful shot from the left on 44 and forced Stevens to drop and smother the loose ball and then Knights nodded the ball into the area but Elliott was quicker than Taylor to the chance..
Tamworth suffered a major blow in the minute added time when Coulson missed clearing the ball so Burns was forced to slide in and although he got the ball, Keane went down and the referee showed him a straight red. Daniels struck the dead ball into the wall and the whistle blew for the break.

HT: Alfreton Town 1    1 Tamworth

Alfreton restarted proceedings and forced a couple of quick corners at the top of the ground.
Tamworth countered though and after a good passage of play at the bottom of the pitch Verma spotted an opening after Knights and Asante had combined well, but Elliott pulled off a great save to deny the final shot on 49.
Knights fired a freekick into the box on 54 which was headed high and behind for a left sided flagkick which Elliott punched away then dropped to smother Verma’s disguised shot from 18 yards.
Allan scythed Taylor down on the half way line on 56 and was booked for his efforts Jones put the ball behind for a corner when a driven cross from the left came in dangerously and the resultant effort cleared the bar on the hour.
Despite the hard work all over the park Tamworth needed to remain focussed and a Jennings strike on 66 whistled past the right hand post.
As players struggled to keep their feet in the damp conditions Allan hit a shot from 30 yards which flew near to by thankfully over the target on 68 and the home side made a second change shortly after, Platt swung a deep cross to the far post on 71 which set up nicely but Stevens caught it well and Daniels came off as Alfreton completed all their substitutions on 73.
Sharpe turned his man on the left wing but was pulled back for a freekick on 78 and Knights lopped it towards the far post for Elliott to gather before he was replaced by Powell.
A deep Alfreton corner on 82 was headed down and beat Stevens but Stabana cleared it off the line to keep the scores level.
But in the 87th minute Taylor put his arm around Allan and pulled him down as he turned in the box allowing Westcarr to send Stevens the wrong way from the penalty spot and give the home side the lead (1-2, 87 mins)
Tamworth pushed forwards in the four minutes of added time and when Asante was upended Verma stepped up and his freekick was deflected up and over the bar by a foot or two with the keeper on the floor.
A deep dead ball from the left was headed by Jones off a defender for a corner which Jones got his head onto but it was cleared by Alfreton and they broke up field and Taylor did well to halt the attack before the final whistle blew on a positive defeat with plenty of talking points.
