Late Knights strike secures a point

FT: Tamworth 1    1 York City

03 February 2018

After the single goal reversal the previous Saturday at Spennymoor, The Lambs entertained The Minstermen. Andy Morrell made three changes to the side that ran out at the Brewery Field with new signing Rhys Sharpe making his debut at left back while Coulson and Reid took spots at the expense of Taylor, Kotwica, and Lane.
On a drizzly afternoon, Tamworth kicked off attacking the Meadow Street End in the first half and an early cross from Burns on the left kept the ball in the final third.
The Lambs kept the pressure up and defended strongly when required, Reid forced a corner on the right on 14 following a bruising challenge with Burn which saw the City defender have to leave the field.
From the flag kick Jones rose highest to head towards the near but it was nodded away from under the bar by Brown.
York pushed forwards and Kettle brought down Smith as he pushed through the midfield with a clattering challenge, he picked up a booking for his efforts and the freekick came to nothing.
Knights whipped the ball into the box from the right on 20 and Reid met it with his right boot but couldn’t direct it on target. A cross from inside the right of the box was dealt with by the Lambs defence on 28 and Tamworth broke from the chance at the other end with Reid threading the ball through to Knights, but the return ball caught the former off side.
Shaw and Knights combined in a 1-2 but the former couldn’t get his placed shot on target inside the far post, and from the ensuing play Smith struck a shot from the right of the box and forced Stevens to tip it over the bar.
York kept the pressure on from the corner and there was a goalmouth scramble before the ball was eventually cleared away and struck high and wide from distance.
On 41 Sharpe did some good work down the left and received the ball back before striking an inch perfect cross onto the head of Reid, but Reid was unable to get direction on it to direct it on target or force Bartlett into a save.
Knights put the ball into the area on 44 from the right channel and it fell onto the head of Reid but his glancing header went wide of the mark.

HT: Tamworth 0    0 York City

City restarted proceedings and Brown quickly picked up a booking for a double foul on Powell as the winger tried to get down the Shed side of the ground by the clubhouse.
Knights deadball skipped off the damp surface into the box and Reid got a touch to it but not enough to divert it goalward.
Powell lost the ball in midfield on 50 and York sprinted up fired to force a corner on the right which was only half cleared and a second corner was the result. Bencherif stooped low to head the ball goalward and it cannoned off the post.
Connolly threaded the ball to Smith and he forced another right sided corner which was cleared and the Lambs broke upfield with Powell heading into the box with the ball at his feet.
City defended strongly enough and countered through former Lambs Heslop and Moke but the latter curled his shot into the grateful arms of Stevens.
Newton struck a hopeful shot from the edge of the area which cleared the away end terrace by some distance on the hour and Powell made a darting run into the box on 62 but his pace took him out of play before he could square the ball to his waiting teammates.
A deep freekick from Kettle was headed down goalward by Verma on 64 but a combination of post and keeper denied him. At the other end Newton curled a shot from 20 yards onto the roof of the net with Stevens in full flight, then following a City change Powell hit a low shot at Bartlett.
Powell was involved again on 68 with the ball eventually falling to Shaw and then Knights but neither could force it home from 12 yards and Bartlett dropped to collect.
Moke crossed low for Ferguson on 68 and his header from a couple of feet off the floor had to be dealt with by Stevens, and he did exactly that to keep it goalless.
Gray crossed low into the box on 71 and Coulson nearly walked it into the net only for Stevens to boot it clear in the nick of time!
Connolly was given far too much time and space to look up and pick his spot from 25 yards on 73 and his shot took one bounce as it kipped past Stevens and gave the visitors the lead (0-1, 73 mins) The Lambs made a change with just over 10 to go, with Turner coming on for Powell.
Burns’ header took a deflection for a corner but it came to nothing, in the next move though the ball came into the box and Turner and Reid conspired to put the ball just wide of the mark.
Burns was replaced by Kotwica with 5 remaining and he put a curling ball into the box from the right which Bartlett got to before Turner.
The with almost the last kick of normal time a long throw from the right wing by Sharpe was half cleared out of the box to Knights, posied on the 18 yard line and he duly half volleyed it past Bartlett with a powerful strike that gave the keeper no chance (1-1. 89 mins)
York pushed up the field and forced Stevens to protect his near post deep into the four minutes added time but neither side could force a winner before the whistle blew.
