Lambs work hard but fall to Moors

FT: Spennymoor Town 1    0 Tamworth

27 January 2018

After the encouraging 1-1 draw at home to Brackley, boss Andy Morrell took his squad to The Brewery Field for the first ever time in The Lambs history to face their back to back promotion chasing 5th placed hosts.
With Morley suffering a dead leg, Lane came into the starting eleven and Tamworth got the game underway, kicking up the Moors slope which put the one previously at The Lamb to shame!

Tamworth started brightly and inside the first minute Kotwica sent a corner in which keeper Porter took and the home side countered through Anderson who fired a freekick at Stevens.
A good Lambs move on 5 saw Turner free down the left, and his ball to Kotwica was helped onto Shaw who shot wide of the mark from 12 yards.
Johnson hit a shot at Stevens on 7 and a long cross pitch ball to Hall beat the Lambs offside down the right who pulled it back to Ranshaw who in turn struck it over the bar from a central position. Burns, Shaw and Taylor all linked a couple of minutes later but the end result took a deflection out for a corner on the left which came to nothing.
Shaw spotted an opening for a shot on 21 but his effort rose over the bar and from that Spennymoor pushed down the hill threading the ball through for (Greg) Taylor to place into the near top corner from the left of the box past Stevens. (0-1, 25 mins)
The Lambs then survived a close call within a minute or so of the restart as the ball was struck onto the far post by Anderson and rebounded past the left hand upright and was cleared.
Henry was booked for a pull on Taylor on the half way line on 31 and the same player was involved a minute later glancing a header from a right sided corner.
A Lambs flagkick on 34 was taken by Porter and Spennymoor proceeded to burst down the hill with Hall crossing from the right but Lane threw himself in the way of the final shot and was happy to concede a corner.
Hall also had the final action of the half striking a low shot which was blocked, then cleared before the whistle blew after 1 minute of added time.

HT: Spennymoor Town 1    0 Tamworth

Morrell made a double change before the second half got underway and coupled with the change in slope gradient it allowed The Lambs to exert pressure on the home side for the opening 10 minutes of the half.
Knights, Reid and Kotwica all got themselves involved with the latter curling his effort over the bar from 18 yards. After riding the early second half pressure Spennymoor tried to turn the screw and Jones put himself in the way of Taylor’s strike at Stevens.
A deep freekick from Ramshaw whizzed past the far post on 58 and he was on the end of a defence splitting pass from Anderson which Shaw had to be in his mettle to clear.
Spennymoor turned defence into attack around the 68th minute after a Taylor cross into the Spennymoor box but the next move saw what looked like an equaliser from Shaw ruled out after the linesman spotted it had deflected off a fellow teammate in an offside position and gone past Porter into the bottom right of the goal.
Knights and Shaw continued to work hard to get the ball into the final third and both tried but failed to hit the target with efforts on goal.
With 15 minutes remaining Coulson replaced Kotwica up front and immediately worked to force a corner on the right.
However, from the flagkick Town broke up the field and Ramshaw struck the base of the left hand post with a shot from 18 yards and Jones had to throw himself in front of the ball when the home side continued to attack.
A floated right sided cross onto the head of Johnson looked like it would double Spennymoor’s lead on 85 but Stevens pulled off a superb one handed save to deny him.
There was one last chance for Shaw to test Porter deep into added time but his 95th minute low shot was straight at the keeper and the home side celebrated a narrow victory.
