Who can challenge Juventus to the Serie A title next season

Thursday May 23, 2019

For the eighth year in a row, Juventus have been crowned the champions of Serie A. Whereas last season I Bianconeri were run close in the title race by Napoli, this season has been far more comfortable and no side has really looked close to preventing Juventus from making it eight in a row.

But are there any teams in the division who, with a few signings, could run Juventus close, or maybe even end their streak of Serie A titles? You can check out the odds here – https://www.betfair.com/exchange/plus/football/competition/81.

 Roma

The red half of the capital are known for being the Italian team who finishes in second place. Since Roma’s third Serie A title back in the 2000/01 season, the club have finished as the runners-up on nine occasions.

Although the club have struggled in the league this season and look unlikely to reach the Champions League, with a few additions over the summer, there’s no reason why they can’t bounce back. Losing goalkeeper Alisson to Liverpool was a big blow to the club, and their replacement, Robin Olsen, has failed to provide assured performances between the sticks.
With rumours suggesting that the club could lose some of its more important players over the summer, Roma might struggle to build a cohesive unit of sufficient quality for next season, but keep an eye out for them.

 Inter Milan

Italy’s third most successful team Inter Milan have begun to rebuild their squad into becoming a force for the Serie A title. A series of shrewd signings, both permanent and on-loan have been the reason why they’ve climbed back up to the top four of the division.

Radja Nainggolan’s transfer from rivals Roma in a deal worth around €38 million significantly improved the midfield. He was one of Roma’s best performers in the 2017/18 season as they reached the semi-finals of the Champions League. It was a real statement of intent from the club and this continued with the signing of Stefan de Vrij, who joined on a free from Lazio.
In the loan market, they have managed to add some strong players to the squad. Šime Vrsaljko joined from Atlético Madrid for the season to improve their options at right back. Unfortunately, his season was ended early at the end of January when he suffered an injury that ruled him out for six months.

Former Lazio attacking midfielder Keita Baldé joined on loan from Monaco, and Inter have the option to make the move permanent in a €30 million transfer.

 Napoli

Arguably the team most likely to challenge Juventus for the title are the runners-up from last season and this season – Napoli. Despite losing Pepe Reina to league rivals AC Milan and Jorginho to Chelsea in the summer transfer window, they’ve maintained their position of second in the league.

After over a decade with Napoli, Slovakian midfielder Marek Hamšíkleft the club to join Chinese side Dalian Yifang in a €13 million deal. While it was another blow to their title ambitions, by securing Champions League football for next season, they have the chance to reinvest in the squad and can offer potential signings the chance to play in the Champions League.
Rumours persist that the club could lose star defender Kalidou Koulibaly in the summer, which might just prove to be the biggest loss if it happens. Assuming the core group of players can be kept together, there’s no reason why a few additions to the squad can’t take them back to being a serious challenger for the title.
