 Rhys began his career with Barton Rovers, where he remained for three seasons, before moving onto Royston Town, where he played for a season. Hoenes then had a brief stint with St. Albans City, before a move, initially on loan to Biggleswade Town, saw him enjoy a clinical season in front of goal, which drew the attention of numerous clubs.

 Rhys signed for Kettering Town for the 2017-18 season and helped the club to a 4th place finish, eventually losing out to Slough Town 3-1 in the play-offs. He made a total of 46 appearances and scored six goals in the first season.

 Hoenes' second season with Kettering Town was much more memorable making 40 appearances and scoring 24 goals in all competitions. He finished as the clubs top goalscorer and helped Kettering Town lift the Southern League Premier Central title.

 On 12 June 2019, Tamworth followed up their signing of Lathaniel Rowe-Turner  with the signing of Rhys, The two had played in the title winning Kettering Town team the previous season.
