Born and bred in Birmingham, a career in cricket or football was the early conundrum for James, as he came up through the Warwickshire County Cricket Club’s Bears’ junior Academy ranks, but opted to play football. It was at Birmingham City where he began his football journey. He captained both the U18 and U21 sides, and even became a member of the first team squad, but didn't make a senior appearance. Fry was loaned out to Conference North side Leamington during the 2013-14 season, but injured his ankle ligaments in training which kept him sidelined till April 2014. James returned to Leamington for the 2014-15 season and also had a loan spell with Kidderminster Harriers in the Conference Premier, but was cut short due to injury. During that season, Fry was a member of the victorious Birmingham Senior Cup winning squad, who defeated Nuneaton Town 2-1 in the final.

Following his departure from Birmingham City, James returned to Leamington, in a bid to rehabilitate following a serious ankle injury whilst on loan at Kidderminster Harriers, James did enough to earn a contract, although injury again disrupted his season, but did return to help the club the club reach the Southern League Premier Division Play-off final, losing out 2-1 to Hungerford Town.

James signed for Stratford Town on 26 August 2016, spending three seasons as captain of the club, with his final season under the stewardship of Thomas Baillie.  He helped Stratford Town reach the Play-offs, but they were defeated by eventual winners King’s Lynn Town 3-1 in the semi finals. James did help Stratford Town win the Southern League Cup that season, defeating Cinderford Town 1-0 in the final.

On 13 June 2019, Fry signed a contract with Tamworth, reuniting the player with his former manager Thomas Baillie.
